PSHE, RSE and Wellbeing

PSHE, RSE and Wellbeing at The Royal School

At The Royal School our PSHE and RSE curriculum aims to give the children the knowledge, skills and attitudes that they need to effectively navigate the complexities of life in the 21st Century. The curriculum covers key areas which will support children to make informed choices now and in the future around their health, safety, wellbeing , relationships, and financial matters and will support them in becoming confident individuals and active members of society.

We use Kapow Primary's PSHE and RSE scheme of work which covers the Relationships and Health Education statutory guidance (as set out by the DfE) and refers to the PSHE Associations Programme of Study which is recommended by the DfE.

The scheme covers wider PSHE learning, in line with the requirement of the National Curriculum (2014), and learning through the scheme significantly contributes to the children's personal development promoting the four fundamental British values which reflect life in modern Britain: democracy; rule of law; respect and tolerence; and individual liberty.

Our PSHE, RSE and wellbeing curriculums are integrated across our whole school broad and balanced curriculum. Safeguarding is of utmost importance and the children are taught about safeguarding, including online safety. Our curriculum introduces and revisits ideas of personal boundaries, consent and communicating our boundaries with others. This prepares children for the challenges and responsibilities they will face in the future.

Our PSHE and RSE curriculum is taught across the school, it consists of three areas of learning in EYFS which align with the EYFS prime area of Personal, Social and Emotional development, and five areas of learing across KS1 and KS2.

EYFS

  • Self-regulation
  • Building relationships
  • Managing self

Key stage 1 and 2

  • Families and relationships
  • Health and wellbeing
  • Safety and the changing body
  • Citizenship
  • Economic wellbeing

Each area is revisited to enable the children to build upon prior learning. The lessons also provide a progressive programme and knowledge organisers are used to summarise the learning for each unit.

A range of teaching and learning activities are used and are based on good practice in teaching PSHE/RSE education to ensure that all children can access learning and make progress. In Key stage 1 and 2 there is an introductory lesson at the start of each year to negotiate ground rules for the lessons. These ground rules can then be referred to throughout the year to help create a safe learning environment. Lessons are differentiated and scaffolded, as required, so that the needs of each learner is met. Many lessons, stories, scenarios, and video clips provide opportunities for the children to engage in real life and current topics in a safe and structured way. Role-play activities are also used to help the children to play out scenarios that they may find themselves in.

There are meaningful opportunities for cross-curricular learning, particularly in Computing for on-line safety and Science for growing, teeth, diet and lifestyle. Lessons provide consistent messages across the school including how and where to access help.

The role of parents and carers is recognised and the school works closely with parents and carers to include them in their children's learning.

Formative and summative assessment is on-going throughout our curriculum. Teachers use a range of assessment methods to determine the children's level of understanding and determine progression in learning, these assessment methods include the use of quizzes and knowledge catchers.

Wellbeing

The wellbeing of everyone in our school community is of utmost importance to us.

Alongside all our other subjcet areas we teach Kapow Primary's wellbeing curriculum which is based upon the governments five areas of individual action to improve wellbeing; 'Connect, Be active, Take notice, Keep learning and Give'.  Learning about wellbeing is also supported through collective worship, through our Royal School 'BRIGHT' values and our work on emotional literacy through The Zones of Regulation.

The repeated areas of focus that children explore each year are:-

  • Discover - Learning to try something new and how to cope with the experiences that new emotions bring
  • Take notice - Learning to pay attention to the present and being more aware of waht is going on around them and within them
  • Connect - Learning how to develop existing friendships, understanding the importance of others' thoughts and feelings and building new relationships
  • Give - Learning to give and be kind while thinking of others and the gift of giving
  • Move - Learning about the importance of being physically active and different ways of doing so
